Jefferson Elementary teachers (Mr. Bishop and Mr. Norman, the hi-cap teachers) asked us to come because they are moving into the persuasive writing section of the year and they wanted their students to learn to make good arguments and responses. We taught them ethos/pathos/logos, basic Refutation skills, then moved on to some SPAR rounds.
It was a lot of fun to see 40 elementary kids so enthusiastic about debating... We did things "Resolved: the MVSD ought to ban homework," "Resolved: the US ought to lower the voting age to 10 years old," and "Resolved: the world needs more female superheroes.". My students were beaming when we left... They had a great time.
